Why classification comes first
In a hazardous area, the question is never whether a spark could ignite the atmosphere. It is how often that atmosphere is present.
What each zone means
Zone 0 describes a location where an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods. Zone 1 covers areas where it is likely in normal operation. Zone 2 is reserved for places where it is unlikely, and if it does occur, only for a short time.
Matching equipment to the risk
The zone dictates the equipment. A fitting certified for Zone 1 carries a protection concept rated to contain or avoid ignition under far more demanding conditions than one intended only for Zone 2.
