A flameproof enclosure is an explosion-protection system designed for electrical equipment installed in hazardous areas where flammable gases or vapours may be present.
The basic principle is simple: instead of guaranteeing that an ignition can never occur inside the enclosure, the enclosure is designed to safely contain an internal explosion.
How does a flameproof enclosure work?
Electrical components such as contactors, switches, terminals and relays can produce electrical arcs, sparks or heat.
If a flammable gas enters an enclosure and is ignited, an internal explosion may occur.
A properly designed flameproof enclosure is intended to:
- Withstand the pressure generated by the internal explosion
- Prevent permanent damage that would compromise its protection
- Cool escaping combustion gases through specially designed flamepaths
- Prevent the internal flame from igniting the external hazardous atmosphere
This protection concept is commonly identified as Ex d.
What is a flamepath?
A flamepath is a carefully engineered joint between parts of a flameproof enclosure.
Examples include joints between:
- Enclosure body and cover
- Threaded covers and bodies
- Shafts and bushes
- Certified entries and enclosure walls
If combustion gases escape from an internal explosion, the flamepath helps cool them sufficiently before they reach the surrounding atmosphere.
Flamepath dimensions, clearances, surface condition and engagement lengths are therefore critical safety parameters.
They must not be modified without engineering and certification consideration.
What materials are used?
Flameproof enclosures can be manufactured using materials such as:
- Aluminium alloys
- Cast iron
- Stainless steel
- Other approved metallic materials
